Ciudad Tecún Úman

Ciudad Tecún Úman, named after a K’iche’ Mayan warrior, is situated in Guatemala directly across the Suchiate river from Ciudad Hidalgo, Mexico. It’s a small town. Shops on the main road sell second-hand clothing to migrants, mostly consisting of knock-off t-shirts and pants with US logos on them. An official bridge links the two countries, and people crossing legally show their papers to immigration authorities. Right next to the bridge is an informal and illegal crossing point, clearly marked Paso del Coyote (Smuggler’s Crossing), that migrants wade, swim, or raft across.
